Are You At Risk?

Have you ever felt completely drained after a road trip, a long flight, or a day of sitting at work?  You may think “why am I so tired, I was only sitting?” There are negative side effects and risks to your health in the simple act of extended sitting periods.

What are the risks with sitting to much?

According to Mayo Clinic their research has shown that sitting for long periods of time create many possible health concerns including increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat and abnormal cholesterol levels that make up metabolic syndrome which seem to increase the risk of pre-diabetes and death from cardiovascular disease.

Researchers have been suggesting that “sitting is the new smoking”

Their research has shown that extended sitting; such as at a desk can be harmful. ” An analysis of 13 studies of sitting time and activity levels found that those who sat for more than eight hours a day with no physical activity had a risk of dying similar to the risks of dying posed by obesity and smoking.”

So a standing desk is the solution. Or is it?

Standing is a natural human posture and by itself poses no particular health hazard. Yet standing all day is not in your best interest either. Continued research shows that working in an extended standing position on a regular basis can cause it’s own health risks. Some of the most common health problems including sore feet, swelling of the legs, varicose veins, general muscular fatigue, low back pain, and stiffness in the neck and shoulders.  The elevated risks with standing for extended periods of time is also very real, and something that people should be aware of.

What is a healthy allternative?

Adjustable desking is becoming increasingly popular for both home and corporate offices.  The evidence of sitting less and increasing movement throughout your day will contribute to better overall physical health.
